Thursday

Today is to be Mikes last full day in Wuhan. We don’t have much planned; no trips to special places. We decide to walk from the apartment area to HUST university and then across it to the little mountain behind it. This little mountain is the big hill with stairs.

Once we climbed the stairs to the top we were not able to see the city below us because of the smoke in the air. This is that time of the year when farmers are burning straw in their fields, making the air quality like that of a forest fire in California. We hiked along the ridge and down the end to a very nice trail we found about halfway down. That trail makes a loop around the “mountain”.

We took the trail, shown in the above picture, to the other side and then hiked down to the street below, caught a bus going in the direction of the mall where we got lunch at McDonalds of all places. I have eaten more western food this week than in the four months I have been here this year, but that is ok. After we ate we looked around for some souvenirs for Mike to take back. He said we couldn’t have any ice cream until we found the souvenirs. We never got to have any ice cream. He decided he would find what he wanted at an airport.

We left the mall and walked home along the site of the world’s longest pedestrian walk. In the picture below you can see the tall buildings that are replacing the older development.

Once we got home we took naps, Mike started packing, and we went out for our last Chinese meal together here in Wuhan. We went to bed about nine to get a good night’s sleep before Mike starts the longest day of his life as he will cross the International Date Line back to an earlier part of Thursday.
