More Trees - Part 1

Along the street in front of my apartment complex, more trees are being added to the landscape. I thought I would take a few pictures for you to look at.

Many on this crew are women. With all this physical work and lack of rich snack foods they stay thin and physically strong. The woman in the white sweater is finishing up adding soil around the tree just placed in the ground. Notice the pieces of concrete in the street. They are parts of old buildings torn down that were dug out of the hole where the tree is now. All the holes are hand dug. Notice the rope like material on one of the trees. The next crew will come along and brace these new trees and then the next crew will wrap the trees with this rope which is made out of straw rolled up. It protects the trees from the sun. It will eventually fall off and rot away.

Here is one of the trees waiting to be planted. It is pretty good size. I have seen them plant trees with 16 inch diameters. Those big trees are mainly just a big trunk with four or five stubs for limbs. It is rare for one of them not to live with all the care they will give them over the next year.

Everything you see in the above picture was not here one year ago. It has all been brought in and planted. This process is going on all around the area. It is amazing how fast this crew can do this work and even have time to stand around.

Another picture to look at and think about how things are done here. Be thankful this work is being done by hand. That saves fuel and keeps your gas price down. Using hand labor saves the cost of equipment and its maintenance. Several shovels cost much less than a backhoe and provides jobs for the 1.3 billion people here.
