On Saturday, September 26, we went to the site of the Terra Cotta Warriors. It is a world famous site where hundreds of full size ceramic soldiers were uncovered.

Originally a huge amount of soil was removed forming a large rectangular pit. Next, in it more earth was removed forming smaller rectangular areas in which the soldiers were placed. Large wooden beams were then placed over the smaller rectangular areas and carefully sealed. The large rectangular pit was then filled leaving the soldiers safe in their compartments. Over time the beams failed allowing the earth above to settle down and crush many of the relics underneath.

The job now is trying to figure out how the pieces go together and put them back in their proper place. Every soldier is unique with such fine detail.

At the site is a restoration area where they are trying to put the pieces back together.

There is an area where the soldiers have not been uncovered yet. When exposed to air the color of the paint fades very quickly. Technology is being developed to preserve the original color. Until that is developed they will not open the remaining area.

Amazing detail.

There are other pits where relics have been found. The history behind this is also very interesting.
