Confusion

Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” (Genesis 11:1, 7, NASB) Being an English speaking person living in a Chinese speaking country I experience the lack of understanding first hand. The question is, “What happened between verse one and seven to cause God, in the plural of persons, to take such drastic measures?”

Again, man disobeyed God and instead of spreading out around the globe and populating it as requested, he settled in a particular region and begins a building program. Man decided to build a great monument to him in the form of a city with at least one very tall building. His ability to accomplish so much to fill his own desire, working with one language was not pleasing to God and so God took some action to make things more difficult. Each time man disobeys God life gets
more difficult. We might wonder today why life is so difficult. I might ask you what your obedience record is like. Has disobedience at different times made your life more difficult?

Thursday, as I walked along the world’s long pedestrian walk, taking pictures of its three segments: that which was finished, that which is under construction, and that where the old is being demolished to make way for the new; I had many thoughts. I will share several of those thoughts over the next several days, but the thought for today relates to the above building program.

My first picture is of the two towers across the traffic circle.

The second is the anchor of the shopping mall at the entrance of the pedestrian walk.

The third shows two layers of buildings. That tall building in the background was finished last year and is an apartment building and looked like the fourth picture in November of 2007.

When I first came to Wuhan in the spring of 2007, construction had begun on the shopping mall, but the old street of more than a mile long was intact and active with business. It was a snapshot of the old life. Today, the spring of 2010, none of the original street is left as we will see tomorrow or the day after. Lives and business have been pushed aside with little concern to the developers. The old is replaced with the new and a city rises out of the ground. Here we have the world’s longest, but then someone else says that we have the tallest.

The world's tallest structure is the 828 m (2,717 ft) tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The building gained the official title of "Tallest Building in the World" at its opening on 4 January 2010. It is taller than any other man-made structure ever built. (Obtained from Wikipedia) However, plans are underway to build a building 1 km (approximately 3,281 feet) tall in Duai.

All of this to say, “Come, let us make a name for ourselves,” but God wants us to come and gather around his name where there are eternal benefits to enjoy. Making a name for our self is short sighted and leads to eternal destruction. God has so much more to offer, so why would we want anything less.
