Progress

A few weeks ago the view from my balcony was that shown in the picture below.

Then several workers arrived on the scene with their hammers and chisels and quickly changed my view with their daylong pounding. Their job was to carefully remove the pavers from two sections of walk area.

A few years ago, when the walk area was paved, they failed to crown the area properly to provide runoff. When it rained, big puddles formed and made it hard to walk there for a while. This winter, with its abnormal freezing temperatures, the water that didn’t runoff formed large sheets of ice and became very dangerous. As a result the pavers are being lifted and any that don’t break and can be cleaned up for reuse are being kept. After several days of work, two workers had things pretty well torn up. This particular day the two men were joined by a woman, who appeared to be more of a distraction than a helper.

I could not resist the next picture. This particular morning there were three men working and then it started to rain. Two of them went for cover, but the third opens his umbrella and continues to work.

I don’t know how they can do it, but they can squat like that all day and work. In the US I doubt that you could find anyone who would sit, kneel, or squat and pound on a steel chisel all day and do it for well over a week.
