A Day at the Park

On Saturday, June 12, Denny, Jiajing, her mom and I drove over to Letchworth State Park. I don’t think I have been there since I was a kid and that was very long ago. The park is often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the East” and is an enjoyable place to spend a summer day.

I directed my browser to StateParks.com and copied the following comment about Letchworth State Park:

Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs--as high as 600 feet in some places--surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks and tours, a summer lecture series, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hot air ballooning and two pools for swimming. Winter activities include ice skating, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

The Genesee River flows through the park and crops over three falls, as noted above. The following picture shows the lower falls from a distance.

Let us go in for a closer shot.

We have two falls to go and they are already tired.

Now that we have rested we pushed on to the upper falls.

We stopped there for lunch

and watched a train cross over.

Down a short distance we came back to the middle falls.

Mother and daughter had a great time

and so did I.

The two of us guys with “mom”.

It was a good day, but there is more to come at Silver Lake.
