Stony Brook State Park

Saturday we joined family and friends and went to Stony Brook State Park, which is located near Dansville, in the Finger Lakes Region of the state of New York. It was a beautiful day to go walking along the trail or in the stream that meandered through the park. We arrived at the park late in the morning and gathered around several park picnic tables and had a great picnic lunch. We were then off for our trek up through the park's gorge to its several spectacular waterfalls.

We began to burn the calories consumed at lunch by going to the swimming area. We stopped here long enough for a picture, but moved on.

As we left the swim area we came to this important sign, which no one seems to understand in English as most of us came prepared to have a great time in the water. The trail is for those who carry the cameras and watch those having fun in the water.

There are so many opportunities for pictures it makes it difficult to select some for this entry. The first I will choose is where you see the effects water has on different layers of rock. The softer wears away faster than the harder leaving the shelves seen in the following picture. Kids love to sit on and under them for pictures.

As we hike along we come to a really nice place to have fun.

People love to get up under the water falling down the falls. The temperature of the water was 62 degrees Fahrenheit, which was real refreshing.

A little farther up is another falls.

At another place a dad was trying to get his three kids to arrange themselves in the water in a certain way for a picture.

Just after I took the above picture, the girl laying down moved over to be nearer to the others and slipped and went down the shut. She was terrified when she reached the bottom with only minor bruises. Fortunately it was not more serious. The sign said, "NO SWIMMING OR WADING BEYOND THIS POINT" and a father encouraged his kids into a compromising position for a picture.

We all had a good time, even the couple who got married up in the gorge and then walked down it for wedding pictures.

The gorge was tough on her wedding dress.
